Community Rally Behind Kansas City’s Only Black-Owned Bookstore “I noticed there weren’t any black-owned businesses that I could easily support. So I went on social media, went through Google, and struggled to find these companies. I told my husband I was going to just open a page tonight, ”said Chelsey M., founder of KC Black Owned.

Chelsey said the site not only provides a platform to learn about new places and people, but also a support system for new and growing businesses. The first event is called the Juneteenth Jump-Off and will feature more than 17 black vendors.

Chelsey said they are moving from a purely digital footprint to real in-person events. “It gives us a chance to showcase black owned companies in a way they may never have seen before. We can see the community outside and have a good time, ”said Nicole Johnson, owner of Our Gathering Studio.

“In our directory we have different categories ranging from entertainment to food. We’re working together to make them stand out and give them more functionality, ”said Chelsey. “It really helps the community to become more aware of their activities and offers and to make it a lifestyle, not just a movement.” Since its creation in July 2020, the site has grown to over 4,000 people.

In addition to attending the opening event, Johnson was also involved in the planning. She said she understood the need. Kansas City’s KPRS is part of history as the nation’s oldest black-owned radio station
