Kansas City hospitals are full, and COVID-19 cases are rising. Some of the area’s top doctors have started calling for mask mandates once again.

At the Hood Barbershop off North Vivion Road, masks are something to talk about.

“A lot of people saying that they should mandate masks again,” said barber Leonard Cooper.

Cooper said we are so close to the end of the pandemic. With cases rising, there are questions once again.

“Let’s say we wear the mask for what, six months, the numbers go back down, and then everybody take their masks back off, then it comes back again. Is this going to be an ongoing thing? These are questions that we’re going to have,” he said.

As of now, masks are recommended around the region. They are not mandated.

“Our goal is to continue to make decisions that protect our residents using the options that are feasible and effective. However, we are not currently considering reinstating the mask mandate,” said Dr. Sanmi Areola, of the Johnson County, Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Kansas City leaders have stopped short of calling for another one, as well.

“Stay tuned. I think you’re going to find the chief medical officers are going to call for a reinstitution of the mask, mandates,” said Dr. Steven Stites, chief medical officer of the University of Kansas Health System.

Medical professionals are sounding the alarm as business owners try to figure out what’s next.

“I would do whatever it takes. And what’s part of doing whatever it takes is wear masks, keep people safe, give people peace of mind,” Cooper said.
